Liquid fast love

Most of us have tried juicing with Jason Vale or fasting 5:2 style for one reason or another, including me. However, I never considered fasting for my mind or even my mind-body connection, that is until now.  When H & I were in Bali our gorgeous mentor Randy who regularly does a liquid fast on the 11th of every month was doing one, and we thought we would join her.  As the fast only lasts for 24 hours, I thought it would be super easy, especially as I have fasted for longer and experimented with a few fad diets in my time.

Bali was an awesome destination to do it, there are sumptuous juices and soups in almost every cafe you come across, all with added vitamin and healthy boosts, but I discovered (I must have forgotten) that there is something addictive about actually eating and putting food in to your mouth (for me any way). Even though I had consumed enough calories by the end of the day I was really craving something to chew, what I did also realise that by having juices I had a lot more free time, I didn’t think about where to have lunch or diner, what to make or what time my next meal would be. I slowed down, literally I started to do everything with more attention and focus, I felt more conscious and aware. Aware of the flavours I was tasting, aware of my surroundings and aware of how my internal body felt. It was actually a really tasty experience. I was also pretty tired and went to bed by 8:30pm, when I awoke the next day surprisingly I wasn’t hungry at all, we practiced yoga at 5:30am and then considered breakfast, after fasting even though it was only for a day we were really particular about what we wanted to eat, we took time over our meal and ate less that we would normally. My body felt lighter and my mind felt lifted.

So guess what? Tomorrow is the 11th and not only would I like to share in Randy’s liquid fast day to support her but, I would also like to give myself this gift of more time, slowing down, being more conscious and savouring everything around me therefore,  H and I are going to indulge in a little liquid fast and should you feel like joining me here a couple of the meals I am going to try:

I adore beetroot so for breakfast i’m going to go for a Liver Boosting Beet Juice: and blitz these few ingredients which I already have in the fridge.

  • 1 beet
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 lemon, peeled
  • 1 handful parsley

For diner I think I’ll try this totally tempting Kathryn Budig Soup

1 bag frozen sweet peas (10 oz)

1 sweet onion, roughly chopped

2 cloves garlic, chopped

4 cups veggie broth

1 cup coconut milk (ideally the solid part)

1 meyer lemon, zest of whole lemon, juice of half

2 T mint leaves

2 T coconut oil here

pinch red pepper flakes

sea salt and fresh black pepper to taste

Melt 1 T of butter (or oil) in a large, deep sauce pan on medium heat. Sauté onions, garlic and red pepper flakes with salt and pepper to taste for roughly 5-8 minutes or until the onions soften. Mix in frozen peas with 4 cups of broth and let cook for 3 minutes or until the peas have thawed. Remove from heat and transfer contents adding mint leaves to a high speed blender, and blend on high for 30 seconds or until smooth. Return the blended contents to your sauce pan and bring back to a low heat. Add lemon juice, zest, coconut milk and final T of butter (or oil). Mix until everything is combined and then transfer to serving bowls. Garnish with a drizzle of olive oil, fresh cracked pepper and mint leaves. Enjoy!
